Historical Hotties

Filippino_Lippi_007

Welcome to my new blog Historical Hotties, a cyberplace where we’ll travel to a time before cameras (and selfies!). We’ll visit paintings and sculptures of the Italian Renaissance, with an eye toward great-looking people depicted in art of the era.

Meet Filippino Lippi, a Tuscan painter working in the High Renaissance in Florence, Italy. Here’s his self-portrait, a detail from the fresco The Dispute with Simon Magus (1481-82) at the Brancacci Chapel, Santa Maria del Carmine in Florence. His art was animated, fantastic, and a bit disquieting.

And it shows on his face.
